I just came back from 12 days in London, and one of my trusty guides was this book by Sonja Rouillard. If you're a Regency romance fan planning to visit the sites of your favorite heroine's romantic escapades, I highly recommend you pick up Sonja's book and read through before you travel. This was my second trip to London, and having the right guidebook made this trip a much more enjoyable adventure.

Romance Readers Guide to Historic London eBook Sonja Rouillard Reviews

Wonderful book! I know London fairly well, but her take on it is not the way I learned to know the city. Am looking forward to being in London next August and following up some of her suggestions.
I stumbled across this book by mistake. I recently took a trip to London and was looking for a different type of travel guide. A lot of the newer ones have a lot of trendy places in there. This book was exactly what I was looking for with its historic destinations. It even got me interested in reading romance novels, as I've never really gave them a read. The author guided me through all of these unique and interesting places in London. I am looking forward to her writing more historic travel guides in other interesting areas in the world!
This was greatly helpful to us when planning our trip to London last August ... had all the places I wanted to see as they were all parts of the books I've read. Very well written guide (and my husband who doesn't read romance found it helpful too!)
Everything you need for a trip to London. Can't wait to take all of Sonja's recommendations and give it a go! Lots of information for each 'stop' and just an all around great travelogue. A must have for romance readers wanting to get the full 'tour'!
This well-researched guide to historic London had me transfixed from the get go. Chapter 1 is a fun short story featuring Emma Knightley who has just traveled to the future. It is a thoughtful well-researched book. A reading of Chapter 2 will attest to that. The rest of the book can be read continuously or can be used, along with its detailed index, as a reference guide. In summary, Chapter 2 tells how to read the rest of the book; it classifies all about the old places in London according to age;and it tells about the places mentioned in historic romances. The rest of the book can be read for fun or can be used, along with its index, as a reference guide. Its use is not limited to romance readers. For example, I recently read a science fiction novel called The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. Until I read Romance Reader's Guide to Historic London, I did not know that the title of Willis' book was a play on words referring to William the Conqueror's infamous Domesday Book, also known as the "Book of Judgement" (p.57 in the Guide). I recommend this book to all readers of historic fiction.
The first thing I did when I received my paperback copy of The Romance Readers Guide to Historic London by Sonja Rouillard was to go to the page describing St. George’s Hanover Square. My parents were married in that church in August 1946 before returning to the US after the War. It was interesting reading more of the background of the church which is also featured in many weddings in Regency era (especially) books.
I am an information/trivia junkie and whenever I read a book I love to Google-map the area to see where the author has placed the activity in the book. Here is a resource for me to get even more cool information about the book I am reading. It includes maps, photos and modern day tips for getting around yesterday and today’s London. I found descriptions and explanations of things, places, and activities that I found in the romance books I have been reading since buying the book. The description of Bedlam was particularly interesting! I had the pleasure of meeting the author in Spokane WA recently at the Historical Romace Retreat 2017. She is a charming woman full of information and enthusiasm about historic (and modern) London and the British Isles.
Unfortunately these days I am an armchair traveler but if I ever have the opportunity to return to London and environs this is a fabulous resource for touring the actual places. The e-book also contains links to discussed sites for further information. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
As a young girl growing up in London I visited many of the places talked about in this book. It is amazing to revisit these places in the eyes of romance. Little did I realize that such romance and intrigue was right around me all that time.

I was especially taken right off in the first chapter with the amusing short story about Emma. What an ingenious gift for Emma to give her husband that just could not believe her incredible tale. Her particular gift at that time in history would have to give anyone pause.

As a reader of this book I am convinced you will appreciate, as I did, the detail, travel guidance along with the history of so many places in London. Even if you cannot travel to London right now but want to enjoy London's history and charm, this is the book for you.
